Houston Area TARA – Texas Alliance for Retired Americans – anniversary party and monthly meeting

The Houston Area TARA – Texas Alliance for Retired Americans is celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Social Security and 60th Anniversary of Medicare/Medicaid.
The Houston Area TARA is celebrating 90 years of the enactment of Social Security and 60 years since the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid.
- Social Security covers the retirement of 74 million people in this country
- Medicare provides health insurance for 63.7 million individuals. 2 of 5 people in the U.S. are covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
- 3 out of 5 nursing home residents rely on Medicaid to pay for their long term care
These benefits are the result of long struggles by the working class for a secure retirement, medical care, and other needs. Many struggles were and are required to continue and expand these necessary benefits paid by workers.
The struggle now is to safeguard these benefits from those that want to transfer wealth from the working class to the wealthy. We must all struggle to save these programs from cuts and to expand them until we ensure good pensions and universal quality health care for all.
