70 workers across four unions began striking at 6:30 PM on June 24th at the Ashland chemical plant in Texas City in opposition to unfair labor practices, including forcing employees to perform work outside their craft creating serious safety risks for workers and the surrounding community, significantly reducing paid sick leave, and outsourcing union jobs to outside contractors.
Members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 564, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 527, United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry Local 211, and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 776 voted to reject the company’s contract and these conditions, and charges have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board Region 16 (cases 16-CA-389483 and 16-CA-389474). The unions are represented by the Texas City Metal Trades Council, AFL-CIO
